THE COURSES OF CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE AT UNIVERSITY OF CAPE COAST

Second semester of 2016/2017 Academic Year

 

The curriculum of Confucius Institute at University of Cape Coast has increased the intensity of cultural courses teaching in 2017. There are two kinds of courses in the second semester of 2016/2017 academic year: the Chinese language courses and Chinese cultural courses.

 

Ⅰ. CHINESE LANGUAGE COURSES

1. INTRODUCTION TO CHINESE COURSE (LAR:120)
This is a public elective course for all the first-year students in the University of Cape Coast. This course opens in the second semester of every academic year. The study period is one semester and it can provide three credits for the students who have selected it. Through this course, the Chinese proficiency of learners should be able to reach the HSK1 level.

TEACHING TIME:  4:30pm-6:30pm on Monday, 2:30pm-3:30pm on Tuesday

TEACHING VENUE:  FELT 8 (Monday), OLB (Tuesday)

2. CHINESE BEGINNING COURSES 
This is a Non-credit course. Anybody who never studied Chinese before can choose their available time to attend the class. All the students, teachers and school staffs in the University of Cape Coast are welcome to study Chinese in the Confucius Institute. The learners will get the Chinese language learning certificate from Confucius Institute after they have finished all the classes and passed the final examination.

TEACHING TIME:  8:30pm-10:30pm from Monday to Friday

                2:30pm-4:30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday

TEACHING VENUE:  CESLT Basement Chinese Classroom

3. HSK COURSE

This course is also a non-credit course and mainly for learners who have a certain basis for Chinese language, such as some junior students who have taken the LAR: 120 elective course or students who have participated in the Confucius Institute OUTREACH course last year. Through this course, learners should reach the HSK1-2 levels. They also can get the Chinese language learning certificate from the Confucius Institute if they have finished all the classes and passed the final examination.

TEACHING VENUE:  CESLT Basement Chinese Classroom
4. BUSINESS CHINESE COURSE
This course is aimed for the business people in the community to study and practice practical business Chinese. Learners can take the Chinese Business Proficiency Test by themselves.

 

Ⅱ.CHINESE CULTURAL COURSES 
1.TAIJI TRAINING COURSE

INTRODUCTION:

Taiji is one of the Chinese Traditional martial arts. It was designed as a unique and profound self-defense technique. As an ancient Kongfu, the especially push-hand is well known for its tactic and technique and the powerful and aggressive opponent can be defeated by a small clever attack or an abrupt explosive power. It is also a good body exercise for the human healthy.

TEACHING CONTENT:  ERSHISI SHI JIANHUA TAIJI QUAN.

TEACHING TIME:  8:30am-9:30am from Tuesday to Friday

TEACHING VENUE:  The Amissah-Arthur Language Center Hall  

2. CALLIGRAPHY COURSE 

INTRODUCTION:

Calligraphy is a unique traditional Chinese art. Chinese characters are created by the working people. It began to picture notes. After thousands of years of development, it evolved into today's form. Because the ancestors invented it with a brush writing so in the narrow sense, calligraphy refers to the methods and laws of writing Chinese characters with a brush. As other forms of writing, such as hard pen, are not very different with the brush writing, but basically following the same methods.

TEACHING CONTENT: “Kaiti” calligraphy.

TEACHING TIME:  10:30am-12:00am on Tuesday and Thursday, 2:00pm-3:30pm

TEACHING VENUE:  FELT Basement Chinese Classroom

3. CHINESE SONGS AND DANCES

TEACHING CONTENT: Chinese songs and dancing

TEACHING TIME:  8:30pm-10:00pm on Tuesday and Thursday 

TEACHING VENUE: The auditorium of Amissah-Arthur Language Center

4. CHINESE HANDICRAFT  
INTRODUCTION:

The Chinese handicraft in this course includes paper-cutting and Zhongguo Jie. Paper-cutting art is the traditional folk art in China. It has a long history in the Chinese countryside. The simple, lively and interesting artistic style has a unique artistic charm. Its characteristics are mainly embodied in the spatial concept of the two-dimensional, knife, paper, lines and decoration, freehand and meaning, etc.

TEACHING CONTENT: patterns, flowers, animals and Chinese characters

TEACHING TIME:  10:30am-12:00am on Friday.

TEACHING VENUE: FELT Basement Chinese Classroom.

Ⅲ. CHINESE LANGUAGE TRAINING COURSES
This course is mainly aimed to teach Chinese for the social people, such as the government officials, the hotel servers, enterprises employees and the staffs of other units. Training time varies from a week to one month or more long time.
