On Friday the 26th of February 2021 a meeting dubbed student-staff consultative meeting was held by the Confucius institute of the University Of Cape Coast at the Naana Opoku Agyemang Auditorium. Present at the meeting were the China Director Prof. Zhou Guiping, the Ghana Director, Prof Ishmael Mensah, teachers and staff of CIUCC and B.A Chinese students from the department. The purpose for the meeting, was to create an opportunity for students to express their views, opinions on issues facing them in the learning of the Chinese language.
The China director spoke on the importance and opportunities available to students learning Chinese language (scholarship and job opportunities). The Ghana director encouraged the students not to regret choosing to learn Chinese language and that there are a lot of prospects in learning the language. The Chinese teachers also took turns to advise the students to practice Chinese characters always, and to attend outreach programs organized by the institute. Finally, students were admonished that with perseverance and determination they will excel in the Chinese language.
Students were given the platform to express themselves and ask questions concerning the B.A Chinese program. Questions were asked on course combinations, job opportunities after graduating, year abroad program and schooling in China among other things.
Before the meeting was brought to an end, Prof Mensah floated the idea of a “Chinese Club” and formed a 5-member committee, comprising of two students from level 100 and three students from level 200. Hawa Toure and Daniel willingly agreed to represent the first-year students, whilst Fred Boah, Izatu Ahmed and Christopher Boateng represented the second-year students.
