UNIVERSITY of CAPE COAST PARTICIPATES IN THE 20TH CHINESE BRIDGE COMPETITION (GHANAIAN EDITION )

On the 29th of May 2021, the 20th Chinese Bridge (Ghanaian edition) was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese Bridge is an annual worldwide Chinese cultural performance competition for international students that aims at strengthening the world’s understanding of the Chinese language and culture.
This year’s contest was held under the theme “One world, one family”.

The special guests for this year’s edition were Mr. Zhu Jing the Political Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Ghana; Former Ambassador of Ghana to China; President of the Federation of Overseas Chinese and Chinese Associations in Ghana; President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Ghana, Minister of China Railway Construction Engineering Group Ghana Company Limited; and the General Manager of Sunda Ghana Company Limited.

The contestants were from the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast, the Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and the University of Wisconsin. Through series of training and coaching by the teachers at the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast, three students namely Kyeremanteng Joseph, Meshach Asmah and Rachel Wuntaanin Naandam were chosen to represent the institute. These contestants showcased their mastery of the Chinese language and culture throughout the various stages of the competitions. Rachel Wuntaanin Naandam and Kyeremanteng Joseph won the third prize and Meshach Asmah won a consolation prize. The prizes included Huawei nova 7i phones, techno power bank and school bags.

It is expected that the Chinese Bridge competition will enhance students’ interest in learning Chinese and create greater awareness of the Chinese language and culture.
