A sustained friendship and co-operation between China and Ghana

Mission Statement of CIUCC

To promote educational and cultural exchanges between China and Ghana, to strengthen the existing friendship and promote cultural exchanges between the two countries.

History

The Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast was officially established in June 2016 as the second Confucius Institute to be established in Ghana after that of the University of Ghana. In 2008, Hunan City University and the University of Cape Coast signed an agreement for educational exchanges between the two Universities. The two institutions then submitted a joint proposal to Hanban for the establishment of a Confucius Institute. In December 2015, The Confucius Institute Headquarters formally approved the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast. On June 2, 2016, the Confucius Institute at UCC was officially inaugurated to start teaching Chinese language and culture to UCC students in particular, and the people of the Central Region in general.

The mandate of the institute is to carry out activities in the following areas:

  • Chinese language teaching programs and related studies;
  • Language and cultural exchange activities;
  • Training Chinese language teachers;
  • Developing Chinese language education resources;
  • Organizing accreditation tests on Chinese language and culture;
  • Providing information and consultative services concerning education in China, Chinese culture, and so forth;
  • And other activities in accordance with the purpose of Confucius Institutes and to the benefit of the Parties.

Since its official inauguration, CIUCC has successfully carried out teaching activities in and around the Cape Coast municipality. It has established 10 Chinese language and cultural training centers including University Practice Senior High School (UPSHS), Qingjian Int’l (Ghana) Development Co. Ltd., Cape Coast Technical University (CCTU), Twyford(Ghana) Ceramics Company Ltd., University Primary School (UPS), Penuel International School and West End International School. Out of the training centres, two are cooperative training programmes with Chinese enterprises in Ghana while three are Confucius Classrooms. Since its official inauguration, CIUCC has so far trained more than 3,500 students in various disciplines.

CIUCC provides Chinese language courses such as Chinese liberal courses, Chinese outreach programmes, HSK, HSKK  and YCT training courses, Business Chinese courses as well as Chinese arts courses such as Tai Chi, calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese dance and Singing courses. In 2018, CIUCC received accreditation to commence a BA (Chinese) programme at the University of Cape Coast. In addition, CIUCC has organized a number of cultural events including Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Confucius Institute Day celebrations. In July 2020, the control of the Confucius Institutes was handed over to the Chinese International Education Foundation (CIEF). This new arrangement called for the signing of a new agreement between UCC and HCU on the 9th of September, 2020.
